It sits on a hill, and in fact that is where its name comes from, since \u201cpuig\u201d in Valencian means hill or mountain. Its municipality stretches from the mountains of Cabe\u00e7 Bord and Serra Llarga, in the foothills of the Sierra Calderona range, to the blue, open landscape, of the Mediterranean Sea. Mention may be made of the great scenic and ecological value of the local agricultural land and wetlands.\r\n<h3>Gastronomy:<\/h3>\r\nVirtually all the locals are able to make the typical traditional dish, paella. On Saint Peter\u2019s Day it is traditional to make \u201carros amb fessols i naps\u201d (rice with beans and turnips), which can be enjoyed in the local restaurants (when reserved in advance). As in the rest of the area, other popular dishes include a variety of stews based on rice with locally-produced vegetables (\u201carr\u00f2s a band\u201d (rice with fish stock), \u201cpan amb carn\u201d (rice with meat), \u201carr\u00f2s al forn\u201d (baked rice)).\r\n\r\nThe local sweets include sweet potato cakes, almond cakes, \u201cencaratas\u201d, \u201cpilota de ametla\u201d, \u201ccoca cristina\u201d, \u201ccoca de almendra\u201d, \u201ccoca boba\u201d and \u201ccoca en llanda\u201d. The gastronomic events organized during spring offer the possibility to discover the rich and varied local cuisine.\r\n<h3>Places of interest:<\/h3>\r\nThe municipality includes monuments of great interest, including the Royal Monastery of El Puig de Santa Mar\u00eda, which has been declared a National Historical \u2013 Artistic Monument, and the Printing and Graphic Arts Museum. The Carthusian monastery of Ara Christi, declared a Cultural Monument, the Hermitage of Saint George and the Hermitage of Saint Barbara. \u201cLa Pat\u00e1\u201d Castle and the watchtower on the beach.\r\n\r\nEl Puig has 4 kilometres of coastline, alternating wide sands with stony beaches. There is a 1 km seafront promenade to the south, which connects to La Pobla de Farnals marina.\r\n\r\nAll the beaches are equipped with sanitary, recreational sports and children\u2019s facilities, as well as Supervision and Health Service during the summer months.
